Does anybody in this fandom care that Rome was a slave and plunder society which chose not to divvy up the wealth with the troops except by taking from weaker people in the ‘burbs, thus creating the civil wars leading to Caesar’s ambitious schemes, more slash and bash, and the collapse of the republic?  The Empire became an upper crust excrescence fostering 18 centuries of slavery and providing (when re-branded during the Renaissance) the basis for European colonialism, racism and capitalist exploitation of non-Europeans and of European working folk who were required to spawn the muscle power for conquest.  All Empires have behaved the same and have ended when eaten by some other Empire.  And they all like to keep the rosy myth of a Senate and a People who share some heritage that matters.

Just joking.  I never dreamed for a minute that any of you cared.  But when anyone mentions the New American Empire, yes, the shoe will fit - very very tightly.

Well, now. I think you’re confusing a romantic view of Roman culture and interest in its history, for support for Roman political policy. It’s not quite the same thing; you might as well castigate Civil War buffs for wanting a second War Between the States, or the SCA for supporting serfdom and unlimited monarchies. It’s not all bad, and if the good can be separated from the bad, then why shouldn’t it be? Maybe it’s all a bit too rosy-lensed; but nobody in the Latin fandom is bringing it into politics, so lashing out at them isn’t going to help.

Also, minor point of pedantry: it’s generally referred to as the American Empire by its critics, not the New American Empire, there not having been any de jure Old American Empire. And I am rather concerned about that, yes, thanks for asking.

Gotta rise outta you anyway - would I be interested in all this if there was not good in with the bad?  That is just the way human society comes.  Even the myths, rosy and otherwise, are of profound interest because in context of Rome (or Greece)  at any period it is easier to look at it dispassionately than at current events.  

Gee, was I “lashing out?”  If people are going to post all sorts of stuff from Rome or Greece, they best get their armor on because it was gory and basic. and not for dweebs.

As to New American Empire, what do you think the taking at gunpoint of the continent was?  That was the standard, let’s civilize the natives, Old American Empire,

.Right now, the Chinese worker who cannot strike, protest or quit is the equivalent of the African hauled to Rome in chains (haha where did all those swarthy Italians come from?  North Africa before Mohammed, yes.)

1) It is lashing out; the Latin fandom should not be accused - and that post was, intentionally or not, written in an accusatory tone - of being supportive of Rome’s politics, regardless of how gory history is. You cannot say, “Well, they enjoy gory history, so they should expect odium,” because the one has nothing to do with the other.

2) The era you’re referring to is the Colonial Era. The American Empire is a grossly inaccurate term for the period, for three reasons: A, America was not doing any colonizing or conquering at the time, as the term implies, but rather was being colonized and conquered. B, the term also implies an empire, singular. The European powers were competing against each other, and each of them had their own distinct empires. C, again, the term “American Empire” is currently being used, as it has been since the Victorian Era, to criticize the United States’ more imperialistic policies, in the same manner as you are using New American Empire. To use it to refer to the Colonial Era can and will confuse people unnecessarily.

and yeah i agree, that was a little mean to the fandom. it was like saying all of us like rome’s politics. we weren’t all here for that, some people joined the fandom because of latin, some joined for culture. we don’t all support the roman empire.
